Abstract

Alkali metal borohydrides are prepared by introducing into a pressure vessel, an alkali metal hydride suspended in ether together with a boron halide or an ether complex of a boron halide dissolved in ether and heating the resultant mixture in the pressure vessel to produce a reaction between the alkali metal hydride and the boron halide. In the example an absolute ether suspension of lithium hydride is mixed with an ether complex of boron trifluoride diluted with absolute ether and the mixture heated in a pressure vessel for 24 hours at 125 DEG C. The product is extracted with absolute ether and filtered to remove excess lithium hydride. The ether extract is concentrated and the lithium borohydride is precipitated on cooling as colourless needles.
