Abstract
Uranium trichloride is prepared by heating a finely divided higher uranium chloride at 450 DEG C. to 575 DEG C. in a stream of hydrogen under superatmospheric pressure, normally ranging from 1 to 15 atmospheres gauge. According to an example, uranium pentachloride was heated to 275 DEG C. in nitrogen at atmospheric pressure to form the tetrachloride. The latter was then reduced in hydrogen at 525 DEG C. under a pressure of seven atmospheres gauge, to obtain uranium trichloride.
