Abstract
An adhesive for bonding the components of plywood or other composite structures consists of an aqueous urea-formaldehyde resin and, as extender, one or more tannins containing phlobatannin. Tannins specified are gambier, quebracho, mimosa, avaram and myrtan. Known extenders, e.g. wheat flour and walnut shell flour, and hardening agents, e.g. ammonium sulphate, may be added. The tannin, in the form of a powder or aqueous solution, may be added to the resin or to the resin and hardening agent shortly before use, or the tannin may be added to the hardening agent and the resulting mixture added to the resin. Examples and comparative tests of other adhesives are given.
