Abstract

595,675. Abrasive - coated sheets. STEVENS, A. H. (Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co.). May 19, 1944, No. 9684. [Class 60] In making abrasive-coated sheet material, the abrasive particles, before application to an adhesive-coated sheet, are treated with a substance which will with the adhesive to harden or cure it at the of anchorage to prevent movement of the particles after application. The abrasive particles may be elongated and deposited on the adhesivecoated backing with their longer axes parallel to each other, e.g. using an electrostatic field. The binder may be glue and the hardening agent applied to the abrasive particles may be a tanning agent such as potassium dichromate alone or mixed with sodium acid sulphite or sodium thiosulphate, tannic acid, quebracho extract, wattle bark extract, quinone, tartaric acid, ferrous sulphate, lead acetate, aluminium sulphate, chromic sulphate, basic chromic sulphate, potassium chromium sulphate, ferriammonium sulphate, zinc sulphate, ferric chloride, barium chloride, paraformaldehyde, sulphamic acid, oxalic acid sorbitol, and synthetic tanning agents such as those sold under the trade names Leukanol R and Tamol NNO. The tanning agents may be applied as aqueous solutions and then dried. The inorganic substances may be fired on. Alternatively, the adhesive may be a hardening synthetic resin and the curing or hardening agent may be phosphorus pentoxide, paratoluene sulphonyl dichloride or urea nitrate, or the adhesive may be a drying oil or drying-oil-modified alkyd resin and the hardening agent a drier such as ferric chloride, cobalt or lead acetate, manganese dioxide or borate, or a heavy metal naphthenate applied in alcoholic solution, or the adhesive may be a polyvinyl resin and the reactant a polymerization catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide or ammonium persulphate. Application of certain hardening agents tends to dry the abrasive particles and reduce their responsiveness to an electric field. This may be restored by applying with the hardening agent or separately a hydrogroscopic material such as calcium chloride.
