Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of a phenolformaldehyde resin adhesive an aqueous vegetable tanning-extract containing condensed tannins or a mixture of such extracts is mixed with not more than 10% by weight of an alkali metal hydroxide and/or an inorganic salt that is chemically reducing, the mixture is heated so as to lower its viscosity (see Group IV(b)) and is then mixed with 5-15% by weight of formaldehyde or para-formaldehyde. Tanning extracts specified for use in the process are aqueous extracts of the bark or wood of trees, e.g. eucolyptus, mimosa, quebracho or mangrove which are used as tanning agents in the leather industry. Reducing salts specified include titanium trichloride, alkali metal hypophosphites, bisulphites, metabisulphites, dithioates, sulphides and sulphites. Fillers specified for use in the adhesives include powdered walnut shell, wood flour or olive kernel flour. Catalysts specified for use in the adhesives include ferrous or ferric, titanium and copper salts. The adhesives are employed in plywood manufacture.ALSO:The invention comprises a phenolic product for use in the manufacture of a phenolformaldehyde resin (see Group IV(a)) which is a dipolymerisate obtained by adding to an aqueous vegetable tanning extract containing condensed tannins or a mixture of such extracts not more than 10% by weight of an alkali metal hydroxide and/or an inorganic salt that is chemically reducing and heating the extract so as to lower its viscosity. Tanning extracts specified for use in the process are aqueous extracts of the bark of wood of trees, e.g. eucalyptus, mimosa, quebracho or mangrove which are used as tanning agents in the leather industry. Reducing salts specified include titanium trichloride, alkali metal hypophosphites, bisulphites, meta-bisulphites, dithionites, sulphides and sulphites. The sulphiting agents are preferably employed in a proportion not exceeding 2% by weight. Examples are furnished.
