Abstract

Iron-containing nickel-copper or cobalt-copper mattes are worked up by a process comprising annealing a crude matte of said kind, the sulphur content of which is at the most sufficient to combine with the copper and iron contained therein but at least sufficient to combine with the copper contained therein comminuting the product and subjecting it to a mechanical separation. The annealing causes nickel-iron or cobalt-iron particles to separate from copper sulphide and iron sulphide particles. The latter can be separated in normal way. The cobalt-iron or nickel-iron separated out can be treated by the carbonyl process with the recovery of most of the nickel or cobalt and the iron residue may be added to further amounts of the crude matte if necessary to reduce the effective sulphur content.
