Abstract

Low grade oolitic and conglomerate iron ores containing phosphorites are concentrated by subjecting them to an oxidation or reduction roasting and then, without slaking, to dry pneumatic concentration, so separating constituents high in iron and the phosphorites from the constituents low in iron. The roasted ore may, previously to the pneumatic concentration, be screened to remove the coarser constituents which are high in iron, and preferably also may be subjected to a winnowing operation to remove metal-free dust. Ores which are fine grained, or have been rendered so by the roasting may, prior to the pneumatic concentration, be subjected to a magnetic separation. In this case reduction roasting is used, and the material is preferably freed from dust prior to the magnetic separation. The subsequent pneumatic concentration then serves for the recovery of the still-remaining iron carriers and the phosphorities in the non-magnetic portion of the material.
