Abstract

A method of treating lateritic iron ores containing Ni, Co, Cr, and Al to produce a material suitable for iron production comprises the following steps:-(A) separating Cr as chromite by crushing the ore followed by wet or dry separation; (B) separating Cr and Al by roasting ores, from which the chromite has been removed, with alkali carbonates or hydroxides in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1050 DEG C. and extracting the alkali compounds of Cr and Al with water; (C) separating Ni and Co by roasting the ores with an alkali sulphate or an alkaline earth sulphate at 550 DEG C. to 650 DEG C. in an atmosphere of sulphur dioxide and extracting the nickel and cobalt sulphates with water, or roasting the ore with pyrrhotite and a carbonaceous reducing agent and magnetically removing the Ni and Co. The three steps may be carried out in the orders A-->B-->C, C-->A-->B, or A-->C-->B.
