Abstract

Ni and Co values are recovered from lateritic and garnieritic ores containing Ni and Co in oxidic form by heating the ores to 430-820 DEG C. with a reducing agent (e.g. H2 and/or CO); dispersing the reduced ore, containing metallic Ni and Co, in water to form a slurry, treating the agitated slurry at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure with an oxygen-bearing oxidizing gas and SO2 until substantially all the Ni and Co are extracted as water soluble sulphates. The SO2 may be added in gaseous form mixed with the oxidizing gas (preferably less than 15% by vol. SO2) or it may be formed in situ by adding a calculated quantity of soluble sulphite to the slurry. The separated solution of NiSO4 and CoSO4 may be treated with a sulphiding agent (e.g. H2S) to precipitate the mixed sulphide from solution. The leach solution after separation of the residue and recovery of the Ni and Co as sulphides may be recycled to the slurrying step to fully utilize the unreacted dissolved SO2.
