[Also in Group XXII] A press comprises laminated columns which are rooted in separate crossheads, each column consisting of rectangular plate elements placed together with their large surfaces in direct contact with each other. A hydraulic die forging press comprises an upper movable crosshead 17 connected by laminated columns 18 to a lower cross head 19 vertically reciprocable by hydraulic rams 52. The crosshead 17 is composed of laminated structures formed of transversely extending plates 25 and longitudinally extending plates 31. The transversely extending structures are arranged in pairs at each side of the columns 18, the structures of each pair being joined to an enclosure 26 on the respective column, and together by spacer plates 27, 28. The plates 31 are spaced by plates 35 and held by bolts 34, and to prevent or reduce deflection more laminations are used in the structures nearer to the centre of the table 15 than in those situated more to the outside. The lower crosshead 19 is connected to column enclosures 45 by pairs of laminated structures made up of transversely extending plates 49 which are connected through crossheads 53 to the rams 52, whose cylinders 54 are connected through laminated structures formed by plates 55, 56, to a support 23 which carries a lower work table 10 horizontally slidable by means of a hydraulic ram 13. The laminations 46 of the columns 18 have at their upper and lower ends tapering surfaces which mate with wedges 47, 48 respectively inserted between the columns and column enclosures, the taper surfaces on columns and wedges being held in contact solely by tensile forces acting on the columns. Hydraulic return cylinders 39 are connected by the bolts 41 to the laminated structures of plates 35.
