710,581. Eccentrics. CROUCHER, A. H. Dec. 19, 1952, [Feb. 13, 1952], No. 3868/52. Class 122(1) A variable eccentric comprises a ball-cage or a ball-race 3 having a plurality of . balls 2, and a member 1a that keeps the balls in the race and has a variable cross-section serving, upon relative movement between the race and the member la in the direction of the axis of rotation of the member, to vary the throw of the race from the axis of rotation. The member 1a may be formed integrally with a shaft 1, or be splined on the shaft, and has three surfaces 1a<SP>1</SP> parallel to the axis of the shaft and on which the balls may be supported concentrically with the axis of the shaft. A further three surfaces 1a<SP>11</SP> support the balls eccentrically in relation to the axis of the shaft and are joined to the surfaces 1a<SP>1</SP> by surfaces 1a<SP>11</SP> to support the balls at variable eccentricity. The surfaces 1a<SP>1</SP>, 1a<SP>11</SP>, 1a<SP>111</SP> may have a semicircular or 'V' cross-section. A second eccentric, of opposite throw, may balance the first, the balls of the two being interspaced circumferentially.
