Abstract

A water-insoluble dyestuff of one of the following classes is conditioned to a desired particle size by milling 1 part thereof with 0.5 to 5 parts of sulphuric acid, chloracetic acid, phosphoric acid, or a liquid organic sulphonic acid of 68-100 per cent concentration with forces shearing in nature, under non-reactive conditions. The classes of dyestuff concerned are anthraquinone acridones, oxazoles, thiazoles, carbazoles, and thioxanthrones, acylamino anthraquinones, anthanthones, benzanthrones, dipyrazolanthrones, flavanthrones, pyranthrones, pyrenequinones, thioindigos and polynuclear peridi- and tetracarboxylic acid imides and imidazoles. The preferred temperature of milling is 20-50 DEG C. A list of dyestuffs of the above types is cited and a number of examples in which various such dyestuffs are milled with sulphuric acid is given.
