Abstract

Organic colouring matters (e.g. vat dyes and pigments) are produced in a finely-divided state by dissolving them in a mixture of sulphuric acid or oleum and an organic liquid insoluble in water but soluble in the said sulphuric acid or oleum without any chemical transformation, and then in precipitating the treated product by an addition of water or ice, the sulphuric acid being sufficiently concentrated to ensure dissolution of the colouring matter and the organic liquid. Organic liquids specified are nitrobenzene, and the liquid nitrotoluenes. In examples, the following dyestuffs are dissolved in a mixture of nitrobenzene and sulphuric acid and precipitated with water: (1) 5.7.51.71-tetrabromo-indigo; (2) 5.7.51.71-tetrachloroindigo; (3) 21.21 - diphenyl - 1.2.5.6 - anthraquinonylene-bis-thiazol; (4) copper phthalocyanine; (5) 4.41-dibenzoylamino-diphthaloylcarbazol; (6) a chlorinated derivative of N-dihydro - 1.2 - 11.21-anthraquinone azine; (7) 6.61-diethoxy-2.21-bis-thionaphthene-indigo; (8) bis-b -naphtho-thionaphtheneindigo.
