Abstract
709,874. Two-part couplings. THOMAS & BETTS CO. Aug. 12, 1952, No. 20251/52. Class 38(1). [Also in Group XXV] A terminal adapted to make electrical and mechanical engagement with an identical terminal comprises a unitary metal member formed at one end with a wire-receiving sleeve 3 and slotted at 5 to form a pair of resilient prongs. Each prong is formed with an ear 9 providing a flange 10, the distance between the underneath of the ears and the terminal body being slightly greater than the thickness of the terminal, the distance between flanges 10 being slightly less than that between edges 4 of the body, and the minimum distance between ears 9 being slightly greater than the width of the terminal shank 2. In making a connection the two connectors are placed so that their sides carrying the ears 9 face each other and each shank 2 is passed between the ears 9 of the other connector. The connectors are then pulled apart whereupon the edges 4 are forced between the flanges 10 to establish electrical contact and the ends 12 of the ears 9 abut one another to provide positive mechanical locking. Additional mechanical latching may be provided comprising a recess 14 leading to a cam surface 15, the cams 15 climbing one another during the connecting operation and the peaks passing each other just prior to the engagement of surfaces 12, Fig. 11. A boss 17 pressed out of the recess 14 prevents engagement of the connectors if one should be upside-down.
