709,798. Vehicle brakes. BRYANT, T. J. July 9, 1952 [July 24, 1951], No. 17279/52. Class 103(1) A spragging and anti-skid device for road vehicles which is described as in use for a trailer comprises a transverse shaft 16, pivotally supported at the rear of the trailer and carrying a series of road engaging members 20, of rubber or like material over its middle part and at each end similar members 21 of a smaller diameter which may engage the rear wheels of the vehicle. The transverse shaft 16 is carried by arms 14 which are pivoted to a transverse shaft 34 carried by the vehicle frame. The members 20 and 21 are lowered to engage the road and wheels respectively to produce both a braking and an anti-skid effect by movement of a link or pull member 26 either by pistons 33 in cylinders 29, which are subject to the pressure in the usual fluid braking system or by tension on a cable 39 connected to a pedal or hand lever. As shown in Fig. 5, the road engaging members 20 are of bevel section arranged in groups and separated by metal washers or discs 25. The engagement of the members 21 with the road wheels 12 causes a rotation of the members 20 which is opposite to that which tends to be produced by engagement with the road and thus a strong braking force is produced.
