In order to protect the contacts f<SP>4</SP>, g<SP>4</SP> of the socket of a connector, for example, for charging the battery of a miner's lamp, a spring-pressed ball e closes the plug-receiving passage b in the insulating socket base a when no charging plug c is inserted, the spring e<SP>2</SP> being retained in an aperture e by an insulating member e<SP>3</SP>. Metal (e.g. brass) inserts f, g moulded into the base a carry the terminals f<SP>3</SP>, g<SP>3</SP> and the spring-plunger contacts f<SP>4</SP>, g<SP>4</SP> which contact the conducting parts c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>3</SP>, respectively, of'the plug c. The part c<SP>1</SP> is a conducting sleeve insulated from the conducting core c<SP>3</SP> by a bush c<SP>2</SP>. A brass ferrule d is held in the end of the passage b by an insulating washer d to receive part of the plug c. Specification 618,156 is referred to.
