709,026. Calculating-apparatus. GREEN, G. W. A. Oct. 6, 1952 [Oct. 29, 1951], No. 25240/51. Class 106 (1) A slide-rule for calculations relating to helical springs, and comprising scales for load, wire diameter, coil diameter and stress, includes additional scales for correcting result values of load or stress for curvature of the wire. As shown, scales V and S for values of coil diameter D and stress f are marked on the stock, whilst scales U and T for values of wire diameter d and load w are marked on a slide I. An additional scale R is marked on the slide I and has the same basic length as the scale V so that it can be used with the scale V to calculate the ratio D/d. The correction scale N is marked on a cursor M with graduations corresponding to values of D/d, the index line of the cursor being set on a calculated value of load or stress on the scale T or S and the corrected value being read against the graduation of the scale N corresponding to the calculated ratio D/d. In a modified form, the correction scale is marked on the stock of the rule instead of on the cursor, and an additional slide working in the same groove as the slide I bears a co-operating index together with the scales S and R, the stock bearing an additional scale V contiguous to scale R for evaluating the ratio D/d. Either form may have a further slide II and additional scales for rate calculations, there being contiguous scales Y and Z on the stock and slide for coil and wire diameter, a scale X on the stock for the effective number of convolutions and a scale W on the slide for the spring rate.
