Abstract

Fire-resistant inorganic fibre insulation is made by applying to a mass of inorganic fibres produced, for example, from glass, limestone or slag, a heat-curable phenol-aldehyde resin and monocalcium phosphate, tri-aluminium phosphate or magnesium ammonium phosphate (or any mixture thereof) as a fireproofing agent, and curing the resin at 325 DEG F. or above. The insulation may be made by forming a water slurry of the fibres and (a) the powdered resin and fireproofing agent, or (b) the powdered resin-phosphate material obtained by adding the fireproofing agent to the reactants before or during the formation of the resin, forming the slurry into a mat, removing water therefrom and curing the resin in situ. The quantity of phosphate is preferably 15 to 40 per cent. by weight of the resin, and the binder is generally about 5 per cent. by weight of the fibre.
