Abstract

A fibrous composition comprises a compressed mixture of short mineral fibres, e.g., of slag wool, asbestos, or glass, 100 to 600 microns long and of 25 microns maximum diameter, and a quantity of synthetic resin which is not more than 10 per cent by weight of the fibres. Preferably the composition comprises glass fibres obtained by crushing moulded bodies of glass fibres formed by hot pressing and 5 to 10 per cent by weight of the fibres of an epoxy, phenol-formaldehyde or aniline formaldehyde resin. To improve the bond between the synthetic resin and the glass fibres the latter may be pre-treated with an intermediate binder selected from silicones, chlorinated silanes, and organic compounds containing chromium. The synthetic resin in aqueous emulsion or powder form may be added to the glass fibres either before or whilst they are shortened to the required lengths.
