UNITED STATES EMU! PATENT OFFICE ALBERT RUSSELL CAMPBELL, 0F GOVINGTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF FOR'IY-NINE PER CENT '10 DAVID RUBIN, 0F CINCINNATI, OHIO WATERPROOFING COMPOUND FOR CEMENT AND CONCRETE 1T0 Drawing.
The invention disclosed herein makes it possible to utilize to advantage by-products that have heretofore been considered. waste products and at the same time provide a new variation or exact compositionof the indicat ed sand is not, however material. In the process of moldin portions of the mold or sand are subjecte to extremely high temperatures, various gases are either formed or thrown ofi and these gases in some manner affect the sand of the mold, and various fine,
parts of the iron and steel become separated from the casting and mingle with the sand of the mold. The sand when taken from the mold is used repeatedly until it reaches a condition such that it can no longer be used for molding. At or about that time the sand may be properly referred to as g ugmnd. This sand is used in preparing t e composition of the invention.
The castin s taken from the sand are generally ground to some extent on a carborundum wheel with the result that some of the carborundum and some of the iron becomes a by-product, or waste product. It has been the practice around foundries and the like to take this arborundum and the and to throw 1 e which was considered of no further value.
The invention herein consists in the taking of the aforesaid brunt sand, iron and carborundum, and amixin therwi I n tit of salt. The res concrete, cement, et cetera, to such low water absorption properties that the indicated structure may be said to be substantially wa- Application filed November 17, 1927. Serial No. 234,041.
'gerpdroof. it Illias also been found that the ar ness 0 t e structure is materia in-- alysis of the compound shows substantially the following composition p Per cent Ground iron 8 Carborundum 2% Sa1t 1 Burnt sand 88% Analyses of various sands used in making batches of waterproofing compound, and all of which batches proved satisfactory and efficient, were as follows:
Burnt Carbo- Iron silica rundum Per cent Per cent Per cent Batch 1 2. 52 95. 43 2. 00 Batch 2 1. 90 '98. 0O 03 To the foregoin batches there was added approximately s cient salt to make the salt content of the resultant composition approximately 1% thereof.
A second mixture of the following proportions was made, tested and found to give the indicated results:
To 100 pounds of the foregoing composition there was added 100 pounds of cleansharp sand and sufiicient water to mix same. The resultant product attained the indicated results. The foregoing composition can be used as a cement surfacing for substantially waterproofing the understructure upon which the surfacing is applied. If desired the waterproofing compound may be admixed witha concrete mass or the like, thereby rendering such concrete mass substantially free of water absorption and also to give greater hardness to the mass.
In instances where the composition was added to plaster, brick mortar and tile mortar, analogous results were obtained. Although there would naturally be some variation in the composition of mortars, cement, concrete masses and the like, substantially uniform results are obtained in each instance dependent upon the quantity of the waterproofing compound used in the mixture. If approximately a quantity of waterproofing equivalent to the quantity of cement is employed in a given batch, a very efi'ective waterproofing is attained. If the quantity of waterproofing substance is decreased, of course the degree of possible water absorption becomes greater.
What is claimed is:
1. A waterproofing compound comprising substantially burnt silica, 2% iron, 2% carborundum and 1% salt.
2. The combination with a hydraulic cementitious material of a compound comprising substantially 95% burnt silica, 2% iron, 2% carborundum and 1% salt.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscgii ped my name this 14th day of November, 1
ALBERT RUSSELL CAMPBELL.
