Abstract

Materials containing oil or fat, such as fish, carcasses, oil seeds and glue boiler residues, are extracted by first opening up the material by means of superheated steam, then extracting with liquid perchlorethylene, which is distilled to move water from the material, separating the resulting defatted material from the liquid, washing it with perchlorethylene, then passing perchlorethylene vapour through the material, and finally removing residual perchlorethylene therefrom by means of superheated steam. The initial material after treatment with the super-heated steam forms a homogeneous mass of a temperature, e.g., of 119 DEG C. Since the boiling point of perchlorethylene is 119 DEG C., distillation of the latter dehydrates the material and enables better penetration of the remaining solvent to effect intensive de-fatting. Any remaining moisture and excess solvent in the de-fatted material are removed by the step of passing the perchlorethylene vapour there-through, which step is continued until the vapours in the condenser reach 119 DEG C. The final steaming step is effected by steam at, e.g. 115 DEG C. A dry colourless, powdered and de-fatted material is obtained suitable as food for animals.ALSO:Food for animals is obtained from materials containing oil or fat, such as fish, carcases, oil seeds and glue boiler residues, which are extracted by first opening up the material by means of superheated steam, then extracting with liquid perchlorethylene, which is distilled to remove water from the material, separating the resulting defatted material from the liquid, washing it with perchlorethylene then passing perchlorethylene vapour through the material, and finally removing residual perchlorethylene therefrom by means of superheated steam. The initial material after treatment with the superheated steam forms a homogeneous mass of a temperature, e.g. of 119 DEG C. Since the boiling point of perchlorethylene is 119 DEG C., distillation of the latter dehydrates the material and enables better penetration of the remaining solvent to effect intensive defatting. The final steaming step is effected by steam at, e.g. 115 DEG C. A dry, odourless, powdered and defatted material is obtained, suitable as food for animals.
