Extracting fats.-In the extraction of fat from slaughterhouse offal. animal carcases and fish. the material is sterilized and converted into a pulp-like mass by means of steam under pressure, dried without separation of its constituents, and then defatted by a solvent such as benzine or carbon tetrachloride. The process may be carried out in a rotatable sieve drum d fitted exteriorly with rouser arms k', k<2> and mounted in a vessel a fitted with a steam jacket b, b<1> and a charging cover c. Steam under pressure is supplied to the material in the drum as the latter rotates by a pipe f, whereby the material is reduced to a pulp and passes through the perforations in the drum into the vessel a. The steam supply to the drum is then out off, and steam is supplied through a pipe g to the jacket b, b<1>, whereby the material is dried, escaping vapours being carried off by a pipe h. When the pulp is quite dry, the valves v of the pipes g, h are closed and solvent is supplied to the vessel a from a reservoir i by a pipe s, the arms k<1>, k<2> serving to mix it intimately with the pulp. The solution of fat thus obtained is passed by a pipe l to an evaporator m heated by a coil n, where the solvent is distilled off and passed back to the reservoir i through a pipe t and condenser p. Residual solvent is removed from the material by again supplying steam to the jacket b, b<1>, and is returned to the reservoir by a pipe g and condenser p. The dry residue is discharged at r.
