Abstract
708,693. VaLves. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. April 17, 1953 [April 25, 1952], No. 10454/52. Class 135 In a vent valve for an aircraft fuel tank, the depression acting on the valve body 13 due to the movement of the aircraft is balanced by allowing the same pressure to act in an opposite sense on a pressure-responsive member (diaphragm 21) connected to the valve body, and the valve is opened against a resilient biasing force (e.g. spring 14) when the internal pressure in the tank acting on a second pressure-responsive member (diaphragm 17) differs by a predetermined amount from the static air pressure acting on diaphragm 17 in the opposite sense. As shown, the tank fits flush with the skin 11 of the aeroplane and the aero-dynamic pressure has access to the valve body through an opening 15a and to the underside of diaphragm 21 through a bore 16 in the valve stem. The vapour in the tank has access to the top of diaphragm 17 through openings 10e whilst static air pressure is applied to the space between the two diaphragms through a passage 23b. In modifications ,the valve body opens inwardly, and by varying the relative areas of the diaphragms, the valve will function to maintain the pressure in the tank lower than the aero-dynamic pressure. The simple compression spring 14 may be replaced by a pair of compensating telescopic springs. The temperature in the valve is maintained by an electrical heater in the space 12f surrounding the flow passage, the supply leads for the heater entering at 24.
