Class 78 (4) In pallets of the kind comprising a platform, upstanding posts attached to the corners of the platform and hollowed out on their inner sides to fit around them and cross-members extending between the posts, each post comprises a hollow upright or uprights so formed or arranged that, when viewed in plan, they present two hollow flanges which subtend a right angle at the inner side. Each post 24, Fig. 3, is formed from a strip of metal which is first bent centrally along a longitudinal line 25 to form flanges like an angle iron and then the edges of these flanges are bent inwardly to form faces 23, the edges of which meet at 26 and are there welded together. The platform consists of a number of metal slats 11 which are bent at 15 and the ends of which are inserted between the flanges 13, 14 of channel members 12. The corners are stiffened by angle plates 16 and all the components are joined by welding. The slats are supported by cross-bars (not shown) disposed parallel to the members 12. Each post 24 fits into a socket 18 formed. e.g. by bending sheet metal which is welded to each corner of the platform. The outer side walls 20 are bent inwardly at the bottom to close it and are either formed integral with, or welded to, a dish-shaped foot 21. A strut 30 is welded to each foot 21 and angle plate 16. In a modification the platform is composed of tubular members 35, 36, Figs. 4 and 5, made by bending sheet steel. These members are welded to each other at the corners and are stiffened by welding to channel members 37 and struts 38, 38. Wooden slats 40 rest on the members 37 and are secured by cross-battens 41. Each corner post 42 is welded to the platform and is made by welding together tubular members 43, 44. The top and bottom of each post are provided with a cap 46 and a foot 45 pressed from stout sheet metal. In a further modification (not shown) a wooden pallet of usual construction has L-shaped sheet metal socket members secured to its corners. Similarly shaped hollow metal posts fit into these sockets.
