Abstract

650,264. Boxes. BARRON, H. C. N., and PALLETS, Ltd. Jan. 30, 1948, No. 2881. [Class 18] [Also in Group XXX] The load-supporting surface-member of a pallet or stillage comprises two sheets of metal disposed face to face and connected together at points distributed over their surface by spacing elements which serve to space them apart. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 the spacing elements comprise depressions 14 in the sheets 11, 12, some of the depressions being spotwelded together, and the sheets are further .spaced and connected by channel section irons 15 at their edges, the flanges 16 of which are welded to the sheets, and the webs of which are formed with holes 17 permitting entry of a welding electrode 18. The pallet is provided with legs 20 formed of sheet metal bent to the A shape shown and provided with side flanges 23, (see Fig. 3 which shows part of the pallet inverted) and with flanges 24, the latter being welded to longitudinals 26 comprising upper and lower sheet metal plates bent and welded together to form a hollow plank with bevelled edge. Preferably there are three such longitudinals in the base, each supporting three legs 20. Rectangular recesses cut in the corners of the pallet and enclosed by angle pieces 30, serve to support crate-sides 31, 32, 33, 34, each comprising a pair of channel iron uprights 35, 36, connected by corrugated cross-members 37 welded by their corrugations to the flanges of the members 35, 36, and a top channel iron 38. The lower ends of the uprights 35, 36 fit into the corner recesses, and the sides 31, 32, 33, 34 are joined at their upper corners by corner plates 40 which fit over and hold together the upper members 38 of the sides. The corner plates 40 are formed with bulges 41 which fit into corresponding recesses 42, Fig. 3, in the base planks 26 of a further pallet supported on the tops of the crate-sides. One or more of the horizontal members 37 of the sides may be detachable or hinged, being normally held in place by sliding bolts. The corner plates 40 may be replaced by catches holding the sides together, the pallet being then formed with tubular legs having projections which engage in the corners of the sides of the pallet below. The sides 31, 32, 33, 34 may be held in place by downwardly projecting nibs which engage in recesses along the edges of the load-supporting surface. Reference is made to U.S.A.
