Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0708020/IV (b)/1> wherein R is hydrogen, acyl or an aroyl radical, R11 is the radical >C = O or <FORM:0708020/IV (b)/2> and R1 is a hydroxy, acyloxy or aryloxy radical and their preparation by heating the corresponding D 5.7 androstadiene with mercuric acetate and acetic acid in the presence of a lower aliphatic alcohol containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms per molecule, separating the product, and if desired hydrolysing any ester groups in the 3 and/or 17 positions. The reaction may be effected in the temperature range 50 DEG C. to 125 DEG C. In examples the production of D 5.7.9-androstatriene-3b , 17b -diol and D 5.7.9-androstatriene - 3b - ol - 17 - one and its acetate are described. D 5.7-androstadienes are obtained from the corresponding 7.8 - dihydroandrostadienes by heating with N-bromosuccimide and a tertiary amine in the presence of a saturated hydrocarbon solvent, separating the product, and if desired hydrolysing any ester groups in the 3 and/or 17 positions.
