Abstract

707,414. Storing gases under pressure. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd., and STEPHENSON, A. June 27, 1952 [July 6, 1951], No. 16098/51. Class 8 (2). [Also in Group XI] An apparatus for using, treating, storing, or conveying inflammable or explosive fluids has means for arresting a flash-back of flame comprising a porous pro-formed hollow body of sintered metal included in a passage for fluid in such a manner that the wall of the body constitutes a fluid pervious barrier across the passage. Fig. 3 illustrates a flashback arresting means in association with the outlet valve 13 of a storage cylinder 15 for a combustible gas, e.g. acetylene. A porous metal cylinder 1 is mounted coaxially around and spaced from a perforated tubular extension 16 threaded into the outlet valve body 13, and between sealing washers 20 abutting the body 13 and a flange 17 on the tube 16. Gas leaving the cylinder 15 passes through the cylinder 1 and the apertures in the tube 16, any flashback being arrested by the cylinder 1. Other embodiments, for use in burner apparatus are described (see Group XI).
