706,799. Change-speed gearing. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES), Ltd., J. Oct. 2, 1952 [Oct. 5, 1951; Jan. 23 1952], Nos. 23209/51 and 1854/52. Class 80 (2) Means on the gear lever of a motor vehicle, particularly a lever mounted on the steering column, for indicating the directions in which the lever is to be moved for the various gears, comprises numerals or other appropriate signs which are simultaneously visible and which are situated in different and easily-distinguishable pLanes. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 two superimposed flats inserts c, d of transparent plastic material are secured by rivets e in a recess in the knob a of the lever b, the rear surface of the outer insert c . having depressions representing the numerals 3, 4 and the rear surface of the inner insert d having depressions representing the symbols 1, 2, R and lines indicating the necessary directions of movement, which lines may be of varying depth. Alternatively, a single insert may be used, the symbols and lines being formed on its outer and inner surfaces. As shown in Fig. 5, the knob a is itself of transparent plaistic material with a hollow interior for the reception of a transparent inset c provided with a plug part f for closing the end of the cavity, the symbols 3, 4 projecting from the front.face of the insert, the symbol R projecting from the rear face, and the symbols 1. 2 and the direction lines being sunk in the rear face.
