706,095. Photographic contact-printing apparatus. MORSE, S. H. Oct. 31, 1951 [July 31, 1950], No. 19050/50. Class 98(2) In contact-printing apparatus in which the lightsensitive material and the transparent original are fed round the outside of a hollow glass cylinder surrounding the printing light source, the cylinder has a narrow longitudinal gap through which are supported at least three electric discharge lamps in two or more groups, the lamp or lamps in at least one group being caused to move longitudinally of the cylinder faster than those of the other group or groups. The intensity of at least one lamp may be adjustable relative to the others. As shown, sheet material to be exposed together with that to be copied is fed from a table 3 around a stationary gapped translucent cylinder 7 by an endless travelling blanket or parallel belts 2 for exposure by vacuum discharge lamps 8 mounted on carriages 9, 10 above the cylinder and extending through the gap in the cylinder. On leaving the cylinder at 7a, the sheet material becomes entrained between the belts 2 and an idler flexible mesh blanket 4 extending around the fluted belt-driving roller 1 so that the sheet material is delivered to the tray 6. A crank 14 driven by the motor driving the roller 1 is connected by a link 15a to an arm 15 fixed on a shaft 15<SP>1</SP> to which is secured a second arm 11. To this arm are pivoted links 12, 13 pivoted also to the lamp carriages 9, 10, the carriage 10 having grooved wheels 19 running on rails 16 on the frame of the machine and the carriage 9 having similar wheels running on rails formed on the frame 10. As described, four lamps 8 are provided, the outermost pair being fixed on the carriage 10 and the inner pair being secured to the carriage 9. By suitable choice of the length of the links 12, 13, the carriage 10 is caused to move more slowly and a shorter distance than the cariage 9 so as to ensure adequate exposure of the margins of the sheet. The cylinder may be air-cooled by means of fans at-each end.
