Abstract
701,596. Photographic contact-printing apparatus. WASTEELS, H. L. J. March 27, 1951 [March 28, 1950; April 12, 1950], No: 7118/51. Class 98(2) Photographic contact-printing apparatus for the continuous production of photographic images on light-sensitized textile or like flexible material comprising a fixed shaft mounted on supports, a closed first cylinder of material pervious to actinic light rigidly and concentrically mounted on the shaft, at least one source of actinic light mounted in the first cylinder, a second cylinder, of larger diameter and of material pervious to actinic light mounted concentrically with the first cylinder and able to turn on the fixed shaft, this second cylinder bearing an endless photographic negative on its periphery, is characterized in that the shaft is hollow and communicates by means of perforations with the interior of the first cylinder and that means for creating a pressure reduction, in the first cylinder communicate with the interior of this cylinder by means of this hollow shaft and the perforations provided therein. As shown, a hollow shaft 1 is rigidly mounted on two supports 2, the lower ends of which slide in horizontal rails 4. Rigidly mounted on the shaft 1 is a quartz or silicate glass cylinder 5 in the flat end plates 6 of which are apertures through which extend tubes 7 for generating actinic light, the conductor wires 8 passing into and along the shaft 1. A second cylinder 10 of material pervious to actinic radiations turns on the shaft 1 by means of a ball, roller, or needle bearing 12, and carries a photographic image carrier 13. Alternatively, the image may be engraved or formed by other means on the cylinder 10. The conical end members 11, 11<SP>1</SP> may be detachably mounted on the shaft 1 to permit the removal of the cylinder 10 and its replacement by a similar cylinder bearing a different photographic carrier. A blower 15 blows air or other cooling fluid through the duct 17 leading to the end 22 of the shaft 1, which is provided with a partition 18 and with orifices 19 through which the air passes into the end member 11 of the cylinder 10. The air, after passage between the two cylinders, escapes through the holes 20 in the end member 11<SP>1</SP>. A vacuum pump 21 communicates with the other end 24 of the shaft 1, the air being drawn out from the interior of the cylinder 5. A screen 30 absorbing actinic radiations may be provided between the cylinders 5 and 10, and two conical elements 31 assisting in providing fluid-light separation between the cylinders are keyed on to the shaft 1. The web 27 sensitized with a diazo compound is fed between the guide roller 26 and the cylinder 10, and after passage round the cylinder is led off round a second guide roller.
