Abstract

706,036. Producing nuclear reactions. Magnetic induction accelerators. PUYMORIN, R. A., D'A. DE. April 23, 1951 [April 24, 1950], No. 9415/51 Classes 39(1) and 39(4) Nuclear reactions are produced inside a vessel, such as a torus 15, containing a gas at a pressure of about 0.1 mm. of mercury by forming a " circular discharge " within the gas by magnetic induction from a coil 19, as by way of a closed core 18. To assist in forming the circular discharge the gas is ionized by a high-frequency electrostatic field produced across the section of the torus between electrodes 22, 23. These electrodes are interrupted to avoid short circuit of the electromagnet and, with the torus, are immersed in cooling insulating oil in a lead jacket 21. The electrodes 22, 23 may be supplied with a few tens of watts at 10 to 25 kV, ¢ to 1 megacycle per second and the coil 19 with a few tens of kilowatts at 110 volts, 1000 c.p.s., producing a circular discharge of 10,000 amperes. The reaction products are removed through an outlet pipe 17, fresh gas being admitted at 16. The Specification refers to the formation of thermal neutrons when the gas is H<SP>1</SP> and to other reactions forming isobars. In alternative forms of the apparatus, the gas in a cylindrical vessel is surrounded by the coil, Fig. 1 (not shown), or in a helically shaped vessel " wound " on to a limb of the core, Fig. 3 (not shown). The reaction products may be taken to a further vessel for analysis or for reaction with other substances.
