[Also in Division H1] An apparatus for treating fibrous materials comprises an electric impulse generator having an oscillatory circuit including an inductance coil, and a resonance coil magnetically coupled to said inductance coil, the resonance coil producing a current with a frequency above 100 kc/s., with a high tension above 50,000 volts and a current intensity of about 35 milliamps. The fibrous material may be of natural (e.g. wool), artificial or synthetic origin. The treatment is effected by sparks which modify the molecular and cellular structure of the materials without any appreciable heating. Treated wool may be subjected to a continuous dying process immediately after leaving the apparatus without resorting to any accelerator or protector. Treated materials will not take an electrostatic charge and, in the case of plastics materials, receptivity to adhesive substances (e.g. printing inks) is enhanced. The material 21 is drawn by rollers 22 between an electrode 18 connected to the high-frequency generator and an electrode 19 connected to earth. Electrode 18 comprises a solid or perforated metal plate 18a sandwiched between a glass plate 18b and a mica plate 18c. Electrode 19 comprises a glass plate 19a supported by rods or tubes 19b of copper, silver, bronze or aluminium, which may be curved or straight. The tubes 19b may be replaced by a solid or hollow metal plate covering the whole surface area of the glass plate 19a, or by metal distributed according to a predetermined pattern. Alternatively the glass plate 19a may be replaced by sheaths of dielectric material surrounding the tubes 19b which may be fixed or rotatable.
