Class 138 (2) Operating mechanism for a washing machine comprises an agitating member 24 actuated by a double acting pneumatic motor 15 mounted on a cover 11 arranged for attachment to a boiler 10. The agitating member 24 may be reciprocated with or without rotation. The cover 11 may be hinged or clamped to the boiler 10. The motor 15 may be as described in Specification 704,846 and is preferably actuated by a vacuum cleaner to which it is connected through an elbow 16 having an adjustable leakage passage 19. The motor 15 has an operating shaft 21 extending into a socket 23 on the agitator 24. Alternatively a number of smaller cup-shaped members, e.g. of rubber, may be attached to a resilient disc secured by the socket 23 to the shaft 21. The or each cup-shaped member may be provided with a non-return valve comprising a port 27 controlled by a flap valve 28 above which is a shrouding member 29. The shaft 21 may have a quick pitch thread engaging a similar thread on an extension on a bearing member 20 whereby the agitator 24 is both rotatably oscillated and reciprocated. Alternatively the shaft 21 is rotatable relatively to the reciprocable element of the motor and has secured to it a follower which engages cam means fixed to the cover 11.
