Abstract

751,347. Dishwashing machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 10, 1954 [Nov. 30, 1953], No. 32569/54. Class 138(1) A dishwashing machine comprises a tub arranged to receive a quantity of water for washing articles disposed therein, the tub being formed with a sump 5. Fig. 4, having a drainage opening 20, an impeller shaft 11 extending concentrically through the opening 20; a drainage control member 22 fixed to the shaft 11 for rotation therewith, a plurality of drainage control blades 23 carried by the member 22 and extending into close'proximity with the wall of the opening 20, each of the blades 23 extending through the opening 20 and comprising a segment of a screw of uniform pitch spiralling upwardly as respects the direction of rotation of the shaft 11, an impeller 6 carried by the shaft 11 for enforcing water circulation in the tub, the impeller having blades 7 extending outwardly over the blades 23 in spaced relation therewith, and means .(an electric motor, not shown) for rotating the shaft 11. The machine described is of the type disclosed in Specification 681,911 and wherein a timed cycle of spraying, washing, rinsing and drying of the dishes, is performed through the agency of a timer motor, driving four cams operating, respectively, switches for a timer motor and the impeller motor, an electric heater element and a solenoid type water inlet-valve, all as described with reference to Fig. 5 (not shown). Referring again to Fig. 4, the member 22 is cylindrical and fits within the cylindrical hub 26 of the impeller 6 which is fitted with air circulating blades 8 in addition to the water-circulating blades 7. The impeller 6 is preferably of the type described in Specification 557,034. At the top end the member 22 has arms 25 connected to a yoke 24 which engages the non-circular end of the shaft 11. The arms engage between shoulders 27 moulded in the hub 26 and the whole assembly is rigidly secured to the shaft by a bolt 28. Holes 8a are provided in the hub 26 to facilitate the self-cleaning of the assembly on the principle disclosed in Specification 657,940. When the impeller 6 is rotating the control blades 23 prevent leakage of water past the opening 20, and pass water between the member 22 and hub 26 to the holes 8a. Water is delivered from the solenoid operated inlet valve (not shown) to a spray device in the top of the tub as described with reference to Fig. 5 (not shown).
