Abstract
591,031. Washing-machines. WHITAKER, Ltd., R. G., and GRAY, F. T. April 24, 1945, No. 10280. [Class 138 (ii)] A washing-machine of the kind in which a drum containing the articles is oscillated for washing and driven at a higher speed for centrifugal drying is provided with a cam-shaft for controlling the operational steps in correct sequence, the cam-shaft being arranged for manual operation only and disassociated from all power driven devices. The invention is shown applied to a dry cleaning machine and the shaft 6 has cams 5 controlling inlet valve 2 and outlet valve 3 of the outer casing 1 of the drum, as also on air transfer valve 4, and a valve 16 for feeding steam from a boiler 17 to an air heater and a cam 12 for varying the speed by traversing the main driving belt 13 over pulleys 14, the drum in the casing 1 being driven by belts 19, 20, and 21. The cam-shaft is journalled in driven members 11 and is turned by a handle 7 according to the readings on a disk 8. The sequence of operations is changed by selecting a different cam-shaft, or by adjusting the angular relationships of the cams by rotating them about the shaft. When two grades of solvent are used, the inlet valve 2 is duplicated and valves provided to divert the discharge to the tank 9 or to a condenser system.
