Abstract
819,168. Clothes driers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 19, 1955 [Dec. 28, 1954], No. 36342/55. Class 34(2) A combined clothes washer and spin drier comprises a basket 17, Fig. 1, supported and driven by a resiliently-mounted, motor - driven shaft 16 and maintained in balance at speeds below the resonant speed by water directed by a spray pipe 23 into one or other of compartments 25... 28, Figs. 2, 4, formed by partitions between the basket and an encircling ring 20 which rotates with the basket. The lower end of the ring has an inward flange 21 to form beneath the basket channels 29 for directing the water into the compartments, the channels having inlets 29a extending over an angle of 90 degrees. When the basket becomes unbalanced by the accumulation of clothes at one side thereof it tilts together with the ring so that water is directed into the compartment opposite the clothes. A second spray pipe 24 at the upper rim of the ring directs a balancing stream of water into the compartments at speeds exceeding the resonant speed. The spray pipes, are supplied through automatically-acting solenoid controlled valves.
