WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May a, rear.
Application filed. March 1, 1921. Serial No. 448,755.
To all'whomit may concern:- 7
Be it known that I, J ACOB KALMANOWITZ,
a resident of BrooklyInKings county, State ofNew York, and a citizen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing- Machines, of which the following is a specification. r r
' This invention relates to improvemnts in washing machines, one of the objects being to provide a portable device arranged to wash clothes by means of especially arranged paddles or paddles located within-a corrugated vessel, suitable means being provided to maintain the water within the vessel heated to the desired extent. I
One of the features of my-invention is .a novel form of paddle carrier designed to have impartedrthereto movement longitudinally of the-vessel duringfthe rotation of the carrier, whereby the clotheswill have imparted thereto, byipaddles carried by the carrier, a double movement which will tend paddle carrier movement longitudinally of j its receptacle; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view of the paddle carrier and paddles, the section being taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
My improved washing machine is made up of a corrugated cylindrical vessel or receptacle 5 having a removable top 6 to cover an opening 7 through which clothes to be washed will be passed. Within the vessel I mount a paddle carrier 8 upon a shaft 9 which projects beyond one end of the receptacle 5 to receivea handle '10. The shaft at one end is journaledin a bearing 11 car- The paddle, carrier 8 is loosely mounted upon shaft'9 and can be moved longitudinally thereof. The shaft 9 and carrier 8 are rotatably connected to a feather 15 carried by shaft9 which slidably engages a keyway 16 in carrier 8 (seeFig. 3). The carrier is arranged to slide upon feather 15 longitudinally of shaft 9. One end of carrier 8 carries an arm 17 provided with a roller 18 to travel along the sinuous face 19 of a cam-block 20, carried, by head 13-and arranged concentric to the, peripheral surface of shaft 9. Between the opposite end of carrier 8 and head 12, I locate a spiral compression spring 21 which acts tomaintain roller 18 in contact with ,face 19.0f
block 20. The carrier 8 is provided with paddles 22' by which the clothes are stirred or caused to be passed through the waterin receptacle'5.
After water has been placed in receptacle 5 and clothes put in the water, handle 10 will be turned causing shaft 9 and paddles 2 2 to rotate, thereby causing the clothes to be carriedaround in contact with the corrugations 23 which will act as awash board to cleanse'the clothes. During the rotation of shaft 9, carrier'8 will have imparted thereto a reciprocating movement due to the cam-block 20, as the face 19- thereof. will cause thecarrier to move longitudinally of the shaft 9. While face 1 9 will move the carrier in one direction, spring-21 will-move the carrier in the opposite direction; hence,
the reciprocating movement referred to. This movement 1n combination wlththe rotary movement will thoroughly agitate the clothes and water, whereby a desired cleansing action will result. To maintain the water heated during a washing operation, I employ a burner 24 having gas jets 25.
Numeral 26 indicates a valve to draw off ment longitudinally of the receptacle during the rotation thereof. 7
2. In. a washing machine, a corrugated cylindrical receptacle for clothes, paddles carried by the carrier, extending longitudi- I nally of the carrier, means to rotate the carrier, and means to impartto said carrier a reciprocating movement longitudinally of the receptacle during the rotation thereof.
3. Ina Washing machine, a receptacle for clothes, a carrier within same, paddles carried by the carrier, means to rotate the car rier, a cam within the receptacle to move the carrier in one direction longitudinally of the receptacle, and a spring to move the carrier longitudinally of the vessel in the opposite direction. 1
4:. In a washing machine, a-receptacle "for clothes, a shaft extending longitudinally thereof, a carrier carried by the shaftmovable longitudinally thereof, paddles carried by the carrier, a block surrounding the shaft having a sinuous face, a roller carried by the carrier bearing against said sinuous face, a spring to maintain said roller in contact With said sinuous face, andmeans to rotate the carrier.
5. In a washing machine, a receptacle for clothes,'a rotatable shaft extending longitudinally thereof and projecting. from one end of said receptacle, ahandle carried by the projecting end of'the shaft, a carrier within the receptacle mounted on said shaft but slidable longitudinally thereof, means to rotatably connect the shaft and carrier, paddles carried by the carrier, a block surrounding the shaft having a sinuous face, a
roller in contact with said sinuous face, and means to rotate the carrler.
6. In a Washing machine, a receptacle for clothes, a rotatable shaft extending longitudinally thereof, means to rotate the shaft, a carrier slidably mounted on said shaft and rotatable therewith, an arm carried by the carrier extending outwardly from one end thereof in parallelism with the axis of the carrier, a roller carried by the arm at its outer end, a block surrounding the shaft having a sinnous face, a spring bearing against'the carrier to maintain the roller in contact with the sinuous face of the block, and paddles carried by the carrier extending longitudinally thereof. 1
7. In a washing machine, a receptacle for clothes, a rotatable shaft extending longitudinally thereof, a carrier movable longitudinally of the shaft but rotatable therewith, paddles carried by the-carrier, and means to operate the carrier and paddles longitudinally of the receptaclein' a fixed plane when said shaft is rotated, said paddles being fixedly secured to the carrier. x V
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature. p
