Be it known that we, .PETER Vfnr'rn and HENRY Gnsonwrnnrvnn, citizens of the United States of America, residing at iittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'iffashing-lviachines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rfhis invention relates to washing machines particularly designed for domestic use and the object thereof is to provide a washing machine with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth wherehy a positively reliable mechanism is set up for agitating and cleaning clothes within a revoluble tub or housing.
lWith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying draw ings, wherein the preferred emhodiments of the invention are shown, and it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan of a washing machine in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig, 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes a rectangular frame mounted upon supports 2 and upon the frame 1 is arranged oppositely disposed bearings 3 which is mounted a drive shaft 4 provided. with a crank 5 intermediate its ends. Upon the shaft 4 and inclosing the crank. 5 is a cylindrical tub or housing 5 having its ends closed through the medium of the heads 7 and connected to each of the heads 7 and arranged within the tuh or housing 6 are a pair of coil springs S. lach pair of coil springs 8 is also connected to a perforated agitated disk 9 which is positioned within the tub or housing 6 and is formed with a plurality of pegs or agitators 10 which project towards the shaft 4. Arranged within the tub or housing 6 and interposed 1cetween the agitator disk 9 is a reciprocatory cylinder 11 formed with perforated ends 12 and also with slotted sides 13. The slots in the sides 13 are provided for the purpose of clearing the revoluhle shaft 4. Each perforated end 12 of the cylinder has projecting therefrom a plurality of pegs or agitators 15a which extend towards the pegs or agitators lO. he inner face of one of the perforated ends 12 of the cylinder 11 is provided with a lug 14 which is attached to one end of a pitman 15. The other end of the pitman is connected to the crank 5 on the shaft 4.
Upon one side of the frame 1 is supported a casing 16 in which is arranged a train of gears through the medium of which the shaft 4 and the tub 6 are revolved. plish such function, sleeves 3a and 3b are mounted in the bearings 3, these sleeves being secured at their inner ends to the tub 6 and are rotatably mounted in the bearings 3, the shaft 4 being revoluble in the sleeves 3iL and. 3b. The train of gears comprises the gears 17, 17, 1Gb, 16c and a pinion 16d. To the shaft 16e is attached a crank 18. The gear 17 a is mounted upon the sleeve 3al and. is of a larger diameter than the gear 17, which is mounted upon the crank shaft 4. The gears 16 and 15b are mounted upon the shaft 16a and the gear 16*3 which meshes with the gear 17 a is of smaller diameter than the gear 16b which meshes with the gear 17. The pinion 16d mounted upon the shaft 16e meshes with the gear 160. The tub or housing 6 is provided with openings 19 to permit of the clothes being placed therein between the perforated end of the cylinder 11 and the perforated agitator disk 9. The openings 19 are closed by suitable leaves or covers 20.
To hold the tub or housing in a horizontal position while clothes or water are being placed therein. preparatory to operating the machine, one end of the frame 1 is provided with a slidable pin 21 adapted to engage in a recess 22 formed in one of the heads 7 and which will prevent the tub or housing from rocking upon the shaft 4.
ln operation, the turning of the crank 18 will cause the train of gears to revolve the tub and at the same time rotate the shaft 4 and through the connection of the crank 5 with the cylinder 11, reciprocate the latter in the tub as the latter is being revolved.
.When the cylinder is reciprocated in the manner as stated, the water and air within the tub or housing will be forced from one l end of the tub to the other thereof commingling with the clothes and thoroughly agitating the same.
Vf e would have it understood that in lieu of the cranks, eccentrics or suitable operating mechanism can be employed for revolving To accomthe tub and the shaft 4 independently of one another.
Having noW described our invention What We claim as new, is
1. In a Washing machine, the combination With a metallic frame, of a crank shaft revolubly mounted thereon, a train of gears located upon said frame for imparti-ng a rotary movement to said shaft, a tub or housf ing loosely mounted upon said shaft, perforated disks resiliently mounted in the ends of said tub, pegs carried by said disks, a per forated' cylinder arranged in said tub and connecting with said cranked shaft, said tub having openings formed therein, lids normally closing said openings, and means arranged at one end of said frame for holding said tub in a stationary horizontal position.
2. In awashing machine, the combination with a metallic frame, of a crank shaft revolubly mounted thereon, a train of gears located upon saidl frame for imparting a rotary movement to said shaft, a tub or housing loosely mounted upon said shaft, perforated disks resiliently mounted in the ends of said tub, pegs carried by said disks, a perforated cylinder arranged in said tub and connecting With said cranked shaft, said tub having openings formed therein, and lidsV normally closing said openings.
3. ln a Washing machine, the combination With a metallic frame, of a crank shaft revolubly mounted thereon, means located adjacent to said frame for imparting a rotary movement to said shaft, a tub orV housing loosely mountedupon said shaft, perforated disks resiliently mounted inthe ends of said tub, pegs carried by said disks, a perforated cylinder arranged in said tub and connecting with said. cranked shaft, said tub having openings formed therein, and lids normally closing said openings.
