Abstract

704,626. Induction motors. HUTCHINS ELECTRIC CO., Inc. July 10, 1951 [Aug. 4, 1950], No. 16372/51. Class 35 A split-phase motor has two windings wound in the same slots, one being more powerful than the other so that a current of opposite phase is induced in the quadrature parts of the subordinate winding, thus producing the effect of a phase-split. The in-phase sections AA' and BB' of the main and subordinate windings respectively are in additive relationship but the quadrature sections A'A" and B'B" are wound in opposition. As a result, the currents in the quadrature sections are in opposite phase, thus producing a phase displacement AB between the two windings. During normal running, voltages are injected into the subordinate winding by transformer action from the main winding and by the rotor flux so that its total back-E.M.F. is equal to the applied voltage and it carries no current. If desired, however, the subordinate winding may be switched out during running. Specification 680,137 is referred to.
