Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2) In an annular shaft furnace intended particularly for the burning of limestone in which the charge material passes successively through a preheating, burning and cooling zone in the shaft a, hot gases from the gas fired chamber f pass transversely through the charge material into an inner collecting chamber i from which part of the gases pass transversely through the incoming charge material for preheating purposes into an annular flue o provided with an off-take p and part are re-circulated via a port k and vertical duct l to an annular duct d which is also supplied with heated combustion air passing from the duct e transversely through the treated charge material to cool it. A series of fuel gas supply pipes b engaging burner nozzles c leading to the combustion chamber f have an injector effect on the mixed re-circulated gases and heated primary air in the annular duct d.
