Abstract
704,326. Combined clutches and brakes. TAYLOR, L. June 29, 1951 [July 3, 1950], No. 16503/50. Class 80 (2). A combined friction brake and multiple-plate friction clutch has means accessible from outside the clutch for varying the effective length of the thrust member or the effective distance between the extreme abutments of the clutch and brake whereby the amount of movement of the thrust member between the extreme positions of clutch and brake engagement may be adjusted. The thrust member 2 is screw-threaded internally to receive a sleeve 3 having a flange 3a which has a series of radial open slots 5. The radial wall 6 of the-member 2 has open radial slots 7 registering with the slots 5. A locking key 9 with an inwardly turned end 10 engages a slot in the flange 3a and a slot in the wall 6. Adjustment is effected by removing the key, screwing the sleeve in the member 2 and locking it in its new position. In a modification the inner clutch member 4 passes through the end brake annulus 15 and carries an adjusting screw ring attached to the annulus. Specification 525,124 is referred to.
