Abstract
704,185. Electrodeposition of nickel. UDYLITE CORPORATION. Aug. 15, 1951 [Aug. 16, 1950], No. 19207/51. Class 41 A bath for the electrodeposition of nickel comprises an aqueous acidic solution of at least one nickel salt and a small percentage of at least one bath-soluble fully esterified aliphatic ester of an unsaturated aliphatic polycarboxylic acid, the unsaturation of which is due solely to double bonds. Examples of such esters are di-(2-methoxy ethyl) fumarate, di-(2-methoxy ethyl) maleate, tri-(2-methoxy ethyl) aconitate, di-(2-ethoxy ethyl) maleate, di-(2-ethoxy ethyl) fumarate, and also the methyl esters such as dimethyl maleate, dimethyl fumarate, trimethyl aconitate, and dimethyl itaconate. used either alone, or in mixtures with one another, or in conjunction with brighteners comprising organic sulphonamides, sulphonimides, or sulphonic acid, such as described in Specifications 525,847, 611,483 and 614,014. The brighteners may be used in their acid form or in the form of nickel, sodium, potassium or other salts. The bath may also contain anti-pitting agents. Free 2-methoxyl ethanol, 2-phenoxy ethanol or the like may be provided either resulting from preparation of the esters, or added to the bath. When the esters are used without the organic sulphur compounds sequestering agents such as trimethylamine #, #<SP>1</SP>, #<SP>11</SP>-tricarboxylic acid, ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, or their salts, may be added to aid ductilization of the high current-density plate especially with pH values between 3.5 and 5.
