Abstract

[Also in Group XX] In a galvanometer or like instrument in which readings are taken by means of an image of an illuminated object formed on a scale by an optical system after reflection by a rotary reflecting portion of the instrument, a concave spherical or cylindrical mirror is disposed in the optical path between the rotary reflector and the scale and is so dimensioned that its radius of curvature is greater than that of the focus of the real image which would be formed by the optical system and the reflector were the mirror absent. As shown light from a source 1 illuminates by a condenser 3, or slot 2, light from which is projected by a lens 6 on to a plane mirror 4 rotatable about an axis 5, and thence passes to a concave cylindrical mirror 8 which forms an image of the slot 2 on a cylindrical scale 10 forming one wall of the casing 12 of the instrument. The cylinder axes of the mirror 8 and scale 10 are parallel, and co-planar with the axis 5 which, in a modification, may also be parallel to the said cylinder axes. The scale may be flat or convex and data for the dimensions of various modifications are given in which, for a particular viewing distance, the image appears equally bright at all positions on the scale.
