Abstract

Class 57 A centrifugal governor comprises a pair of fly-weights 27 pivoted on a member 25 revolving with a drive shaft 21 and having arms 37 in engagement with a sleeve 33 slidable on the shaft, the sleeve being connected through a thrust bearing 40 with a yoke 45 which forms one abutment for at least one pair of inclined tension springs 78; the springs of each pair being disposed on opposite sides of the shaft and the other ends of each pair of springs being connected to a semi-circular lever 76, each lever 76 being, pivotally mounted at its centre on a lever 72 secured to a shaft 61. The latter carries on the outside of the governor casing 15 a further lever co-operating with a speed adjusting screw. The yoke 45 has an elongated central slot 46 through which projects, into engagement with the thrust : bearing 40, a pair of levers 49 secured to a shaft 47 which carries a lever 53 connected to the speed control device of the machine to be controlled, e.g; the throttle valve of an internal combustion engine, and also a second lever connected to an auxiliary tension spring. When the governor is used with an internal combustion engine the strength of the auxiliary spring is just sufficient to over-balance the forces on the throttle valve due to the air velocity in the engine manifold. In another embodiment only one pair of springs is used and disposed one spring on each side of the shaft.
