Abstract

702,726. Valves. ROCKWELL MANUFACTURING CO. May 6, 1952 [May 11, 1951], No. 11445/52. Class 135 A rotary ball valve lubricated between the ball surface and a pair of annular seat members engageable therewith, comprises a body 11, Fig. 1 having a removable cover 16 permitting the insertion of the ball 48 and the annular seat members 32, 33 having spherical-shaped faces. The seat members are sealingly but slidably mounted in recesses 29, 31 formed in the body 11 and its cover 16 respectively and formed on their faces adjacent the ball with grooves 57, Fig. 5, between which are lands 58, 59, bridged by small recesses 61, Fig. 4, formed on the balL When the ball is in either its fully open or fully closed positions. The rear faces of the seat members are formed with annular recesses 38 housing soft rubber pads 39 which absorb foreign matter from the fluid passing into the recess. Spring members, e.g., Belleville washers urging the seat members into contact with the ball may also be fitted in the recesses 38 or alternatively the recesses may house the spring members and recesses formed in the body and its cover house the pads. The grooves 57 are fed from reservoirs 95, Fig. 2 (one for each seat) with lubricant under pressure. The ball is formed with an arcuate recess 50 engageable with clearance with an elongated tang 51 formed on the end of an operating spindle 52. To permit easy rotation of the ball when moving between its extreme positions the seats are jacked away from the ball by the application of pressure to the lubricant, this being done by screwing a bolt 101, Fig. 3, into the reservoir 95.
