Class 78 (1) [Also in Group XVII] In a packaging machine (see Group XVII) bags 11 are conveyed by grippers 94 on an endless chain 91 passing over sprockets 92, 93, the latter of which is rotated intermittently through pawl and ratchet gear 101, 102 by a crank and connecting rod' 99, 100 driven by a shaft 36. Each gripper comprises a fixed jaw 104 secured to the chain and a movable jaw 105 mounted on a screw 106 encircled by a spring 107, the leading end 109 of the jaw 105 being arranged to engage an adjustable abutment 110 which is reciprocated by a cam on the shaft 36 to open the gripper for the reception of a bag, as it is severed from an intermittently advancing row of bags 10. As the grippers pass around the sprocket 93 they are opened by a wedge 164 to release the bags.
