Abstract

701,444. Microphones. TANNOY, Ltd. Aug. 9, 1951 [Aug. 14, 1950; July 30, 1951], Nos. 20152/50 and 17994/51. Class 40 (4) In a pressure-type microphone in which an inlet tube 9 provides an acoustic transmission line to the transducer diaphragm, damping means 23, such as a disc of felt, are provided within the tube for preventing reflections from the open end. The transducer capsule 3 is mounted on, and located by, sponge rubber blocks 4, 5 to be opposite an aperture 2 in the casing 1, and the tube 9 which may comprise two or more sections telescopically assembled is secured by a gland nut 11 to the neck portion 8. The tube is curved at its upper end 17 and fitted with a flared end piece 18 the mouth of which is covered by a silk-backed gauze screen 19 spaced away from the open end. The tube may alternatively be flexible or have its sections connected by a universal joint and the housing may include a matching transformer. A suitable transducer having a foil diaphragm is given a sharply rising characteristic by connecting the air chamber at the back of the diaphragm with the space around the energizing coil, which is filled with damping material.
