Abstract
464,996. Acoustic wave filters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 15, 1935, No. 31677. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1934. [Class 13] [Also in Group XXXIX] A sound-reproducing device as claimed in Specification 382,268 and in which an acoustic path, provided between the two sides of the diaphragm, has acoustic mass and stiffness so proportioned that the sound waves are reinforced at low frequency, comprises a case having an open end closed by the diaphragm, a partition member dividing the space behind the sound-translating unit into two chambers and formed with at least one passage connecting the chambers, and a tubular channel constituting a restricted sound-wave passage for enhancing the low-frequency response of the device and directly connecting one of the said chambers with the atmosphere outside the case. As shown in Fig. 1, the chambers 25, 26 are connected by a tapered hole 67 in the partition 27 and the rear compartment 26 communicates with the outside air by means of a coiled tube 72 associated with an apertured portion 76 formed in the rear wall 71 of the casing. In a modification, Fig. 6, the passage in the partition may be closed by resilient pad 124 operated by a button 138 outside the casing. The front chamber 102 has a radial passage 121 opening into a circumferential channel 116 with which is associated a ring 117 having an aperture of area equal to that of the passage 121 and of the cross-section of the channel 116. By rotation of the ring 117, the length of the channel 116 may be varied. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), a ring similar to the ring 117, but preferably fixed, is mounted within the casing and the outlet to the atmosphere is formed in the casing itself. In a further modification, Figs. 13, 14 (not shown), the partition between the chambers is formed with a number of apertures covered on one side by a strip of acoustic damping material and variably obstructed on the other side by a slidable member operated from the outside of the casing.
