Abstract

732,388. Earpiece attachments. DICTAPHONE CORPORATION. Dec. 12, 1952 [Dec. 12, 1951], No. 31526/52. Class 40 (4). A transducer is linked by a tube to a member adapted to fit snugly into the ear, said tube containing at least one sound damping plug located adjacent an end of the tube to minimize unwanted resonances. As shown, Fig. 1, a headphone device of the " stethoscope " type for use with machines for transcribing office dictation comprises a pair of bent tubes 12, 14 having earpieces 16, 18 at one end and individual electro-acoustic transducers 20, 22 at the other the said transducers being connected together by hinge means 24. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 each transducer has an ear 38, 34, the said ears being connected by a bolt 40 permitting relative rotation. Curved contact strips 56, 58 and straight contact strips 62, 64 provide electrical connections to the transducers the latter being bent backwardly and upwardly, Fig. 2 (not shown) to provide contact springs for a plug 66 which when in position urges together the contact strips of the respective ears. Damping plugs 28 are inserted in the tube both near the transducer and near the earpiece to improve its frequency characteristic. To the same end the volume of air between the transducer diaphragm and the end of the tube is kept as small as possible.
