Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2) A furnace comprises a load-receiving or working chamber a interconnected with a pair of regenerator chambers b adapted for alternative connection with the working chamber by means of a reversing valve, the working chamber and the regenerators being connected by passageways c having gas or oil fired burners d, f, therein, the burners being interlocked with the reversing valve in such a manner that combustion takes place within such of said passageways as are on the downstream side of the working chamber.
